Located on the top of the aptly named Observatory Hill sits the Leander McCormick Observatory. If you haven’t been to public night, you are missing out. Take a tour of the observatory and gaze at the heavens through their telescopes. Even during the rest of the month, it’s still a pretty cool building. It’s my favorite detour to take around UVa, especially in the fall. (more…)

3 Elliewood Ave, Charlottesville, Virginia 22903

Ragged Mountain is serious about their sneaker specialists. They spend about six months intensively training their employees on the science of matching the correct shoe to the right pair of feet and during that “hands on” learning process, they teach them about gait mechanics, posture and form and how they influence injuries, how to properly fit a shoe (which is not an easy task, as many of shoe companies continue to change the fit of their shoes on a yearly basis) and the science of shoes (what goes into the makeup of a shoe that constitutes it as “minimalist” vs. “cushioned” vs. “stability” vs. “motion control”). Confused? No worries, just head into Ragged Mountain and they’ll get you squared away.

Founded in 1948, Mincer’s got its start as Mincer’s Humidor and sold tobacco, cigars, pipes, and other smoking accessories. Due to the declining popularity of smoking and a reduced demand for smoking accessories, Mincer’s Humidor phased out its smoking merchandise and renamed the store, Mincer’s University of Virginia Imprinted Sportswear. In the beginning, Mincer’s offered some men’s casual apparel including gray or navy sweatshirts and white undershirts. The demand for these items was relatively minimal as the custom at the University of Virginia was for male students to attend class dressed in coats and ties. Now, UVA gear is all the rage, and Mincer’s has the best selection around!

Since then, they’ve relocated from the Fashion Square Mall to the Albemarle Square Shopping Center and changed their focus from sporting goods to more fashion-oriented styles and sneakers. They still offer plenty of sneakers and apparel that are perfectly suited for training in the gym or casual everyday wear, so head on over to their location next to AC/AC to get ready for your next season.
