Virginia Kingmaker Sonjia Smith Injects $70K Into Allison Spillman’s Campaign

Virginia Democrat kingmaker Sonjia Smith has now injected $70,000 directly into Allison Spillman’s campaign for the at-large seat on the Albemarle County School Board.

Smith donated $20,000 to Spillman on October 2 and an additional $20,000 on October 19. These two donations were recently announced on the Virginia Public Access Project website. Furthermore, Smith donated $15,000 to Spillman before the September 15 donation filing deadline and an additional $15,000 to Spillman before the October 15 donation filing deadline.

Smith has also donated $15,000 to the Albemarle Parents Promoting Learning (APPL) political action committee, which has raised $21,831 in totality since launching earlier this year.

The APPL PAC donated $10,352 to Spillman on October 2 and $11,398 to Spillman on October 15 ($21,750 grand total to Spillman).

Spillman has raised $190,585 in totality as of October 26, 2023. Spillman’s opponent, Dr. Meg Bryce, has raised $125,278 in totality as of October 26, 2023.

There were 13,970 students enrolled in Albemarle County Public Schools in 2022-2023, according to the ACPS website. Spillman and Bryce have collectively raised $315,863 in donations. That breaks down to $22.61 per student in Albemarle County up until this point of the election.

Think about what Albemarle County Public Schools can do with $315,863 incremental dollars. Think about how many teacher positions could be funded. Think about how many school bus drivers could be hired.

This is politics in 2023.
